Job Description

The Health Service Commission is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Consultant (Orthopedics) to join the public health sector in Uganda. This is a prestigious medical specialist role designed for experienced orthopedic surgeons capable of delivering specialized surgical and non-surgical care across Uganda's National and Regional Referral Hospitals. The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing, managing, and operating on complex musculoskeletal conditions, traumatic injuries, and congenital orthopedic deformities.

In addition to clinical patient management, the Consultant in Orthopedics will provide institutional leadership, supervise clinical staff, mentor post-graduate residents and interns, and contribute to operational excellence in health service delivery. The role demands high medical expertise, commitment to quality patient outcomes, and adherence to professional medical standards within the healthcare system of Uganda.

Key Responsibilities

Provide specialized orthopedic surgical and clinical care to patients in designated National or Regional Referral Hospitals.
Diagnose and manage complex musculoskeletal diseases, trauma, fractures, and congenital orthopedic conditions.
Lead emergency trauma management and conduct scheduled elective orthopedic surgical operations.
Conduct clinical ward rounds, specialist consultations, and lead multidisciplinary medical reviews.
Supervise, train, and mentor medical officers, post-graduate students, interns, and allied clinical staff.
Ensure compliance with healthcare quality standards, medical ethics, and national health policy guidelines.
Participate in clinical audits, medical research, and health system planning within the orthopedics department.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent qualification from a recognized university.
Master of Medicine (MMed) in Orthopedic Surgery or an equivalent postgraduate medical specialization.
Valid practicing license and active registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC).
Proven clinical experience in orthopedic surgery within a accredited hospital environment.
Demonstrated leadership, administrative, communication, and teaching skills.
