Job Description

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is seeking a Landscape Director for the Kidepo Valley Conservation Landscape (KVCL) to support the design and ensure successful implementation of the Collaborative Management Partnership (CMP) with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The role involves driving an integrated conservation and development approach across the landscape to deliver lasting positive outcomes for people and wildlife. This includes program operations leadership, team management, political and institutional liaison, capacity building, resource mobilization, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure successful design and implementation of the CMP in line with AWF and UWA technical and legal requirements.
Represent AWF and manage complex multi-stakeholder relationships within the Landscape.
Oversee technical and managerial aspects of projects and interventions in the KVCL Landscape.
Lead the development of the AWF strategy for the KVCL landscape.
Apply AWF’s policies and procedures in program execution.
Serve as the technical point of contact with key donors, program implementing partners, and stakeholders.
Supervise project staff, consultants, and sub-grantees.
Ensure coordinated input from AWF technical, fundraising, policy, brand, and other teams.
Identify and incorporate key risks into the risk register.
Oversee day-to-day operations of all programs in KVCL.
Review and consolidate tracking metrics from field-level teams.
Lead the development and implementation of conservation strategies.
Design and implement a monitoring plan for wildlife and illegal activities.
Develop training schedules and standard operating procedures for anti-poaching.
Work with UWA to develop and oversee the implementation of a general management plan.
Oversee a rigorous training program for UWA field staff and leadership.
Ensure timely and transparent recording of means of verification (MOVs).
Draft strategic messaging, press releases, and internal briefs for project communications.
Oversee the development of costed annual implementation budget plans.
Conduct regular budget reviews and ensure compliance with donor policies.
Ensure partner compliance and performance monitoring.
Provide technical progress and financial reports.
Ensure effective procurement and monitoring of project resources.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Conservation, Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Management, or related field.
At least 15 years of experience managing conservation projects.
Proven experience in implementing Conservation Co-Management agreements or donor projects.
Experience in planning and development of conservation areas.
Management experience of large Protected Areas, including conservation and tourism development.
Experience working with rural communities in governance, resource use, and livelihood programs.
Experience collaborating with governmental institutions, military structures, private sector, and NGOs.
Demonstrated ability to build capacity of multiple stakeholders in landscape planning and management.
Outstanding interpersonal skills, including negotiation and conflict management.
Good understanding of financial management and budgeting.
Proven ability to manage and motivate a qualified team of professionals.
Capacity to facilitate complex multi-stakeholder processes.
Fluency in spoken and written English.
Willingness to live and work in a remote location under physically challenging conditions.
