St. Mary's Hospital Lacor is seeking a dedicated and meticulous Billing Assistant to join our patient accounts and finance department in Gulu. In this role, you will be responsible for managing patient billing processes, verifying insurance coverage, calculating service charges, and issuing accurate invoices for medical care rendered. As a key member of our administrative team, you will ensure seamless financial interactions between patients, medical staff, and insurance providers.

The ideal candidate possesses exceptional attention to detail, strong numerical skills, and a sound understanding of hospital administrative operations. By maintaining accurate financial records and providing compassionate customer service to patients regarding their accounts, you will help support the hospital's mission of providing high-quality healthcare to the community.

An opportunity has arisen for a Billing Assistant at St. Mary's Hospital Lacor based in Gulu.

Working within a supportive team, the post-holder will be expected to plan and prioritise their own workload, communicate clearly with stakeholders, and maintain high standards in every task. Previous experience in a comparable position is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare, calculate, and issue accurate medical bills and invoices for patients and third-party payers.
Verify patient insurance coverage, demographic details, and payment eligibility upon admission or discharge.
Process patient payments, issue official receipts, and balance daily cash receipts accurately.
Explain billing statements, payment options, and fee structures to patients and family members with clarity and empathy.
Reconcile billing records with medical charts and treatment logs to ensure all billable services are captured.
Follow up on outstanding account balances, unpaid bills, and disputed claims in accordance with hospital policy.
Collaborate with finance and clinical teams to resolve billing discrepancies and streamline payment workflows.

Qualifications

Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
Previous experience in medical billing, healthcare administration, or financial record-keeping is highly preferred.
Proficiency in medical billing software, hospital information management systems, and MS Office (especially Excel).
Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail when processing financial transactions.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, families, and staff.
High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics when handling sensitive financial data.
